Building
How much does it cost to build an MVP?

It's the first question almost every founder asks, and the most frustrating to answer: how much does it cost to build an MVP?
The honest answer is "it depends" — but that's not useful. So here's what it actually depends on, and how to land on the right number for your idea.
Why quotes vary so wildly
Ask five studios and you'll get five numbers, sometimes an order of magnitude apart. That's not because someone's ripping you off — it's because "MVP" means wildly different things to different people.
The cost is driven by a handful of levers:
- Scope — how many features, flows and edge cases you insist on shipping on day one.
- Complexity — payments, real-time data, AI, integrations and compliance all add real engineering time.
- Design — a polished, branded experience costs more than a purely functional one (and sometimes it's worth it).
- Who builds it — a solo freelancer, an offshore team, an agency and a venture studio price and de-risk very differently.
- How much is unknown — the more undefined the idea, the more you pay to figure it out mid-build.
The trap: paying to build the wrong thing
The biggest cost in most MVPs isn't the code — it's building features nobody needed because the idea wasn't sharp enough before development started.
An MVP should answer one question, not do everything a little. Every feature you cut before you build is money saved and a faster path to learning. The cheapest MVP is the one that proves what matters and nothing else.
A better way to size it
Instead of chasing a single figure, size it by ambition:
- A validation prototype — just enough to test the core idea with real users. Smallest, fastest, cheapest.
- A launchable MVP — a real product a first cohort can pay for and use. The most common ask.
- A scale-ready build — engineered to grow from day one. More upfront, less rework later.
Where you sit depends on how much evidence you already have. If you haven't validated the idea yet, a smaller, cheaper step first will almost always save you money overall.
How to spend less without cutting corners
- Narrow the scope ruthlessly. One question, one core flow.
- Validate before you build, so you're not paying to discover the market didn't want it.
- Design for the next decision, not the final vision.
- Ship fast — every week in the real world is a week you're learning instead of guessing.
At Gambito we engineer and launch MVPs fast, so the market answers your biggest questions before your budget does. And we'll tell you honestly when you should validate before you build.
